Scratching out a route up to the top of a mountain is usually not the first thing I want to do. Furthermore, it is almost always a site-specific scramble, so not only am I not experienced in scrambling, but now I'm wrangling a battery pack as big as an RV up a hill. But,... this time is going to be different. This time, I've got my friend. And he knows what he's doing. And, more importantly, he knows how to stay dry while I make a neophyte's ankles wet.
I'm talking about Scott, of course, and the two of us have obviously provided extensive backpacking and climbing experience. As a result, we've had our fair share of good times above the trees, and we've both learned quite a bit about each other in these years. On top of that, we're both pretty happy with the way our lives turned out. Scott happened to get married right after high school, and that was that. He made a good choice!
His wife and two boys were nice enough to come along on this trip, but you can't take out two happy places on a hiking trip. About the only thing they brought with them was their memories, and, let's face it, that's not much of a guidebook. You can't really tell one man's name from the next or one son's from the other, but you know their friends' names, anyway. And you really don't need much more information than that.
Naturally, we want to show them something cool, and that involves a lot of climbing; plenty of hiking; and a good bit of trying to prove to them that hiking and climbing can be one and the same. Hopefully now that I've shared a bit more about our friendship, you'll understand why we have several unresolved issues relative to each other and why we've yet to go tracking around in the woods together.
Even so, I know these two have a lot of energy to burn, and I'm not about to be the reason they burn it up. So, here we are. The first day. We pull into a small campground as it's getting dark, and as we start pitching our tent, I think to myself, "Shoot, here we go again." d2c66b5586
