Most embroidery software has a concept called a File. A File is a text file with a particular syntax and usually has the design data. A File is used to store the design data, to provide the design data to the embroidery software and to import the design data to the embroidery software. A File is not necessarily a Stitch File.
The two main issues with Embird are that it's not free and it's not open source. That is, it is still not possible to freely modify Embird's source code. Hence, it is not possible for other users to modify Embird and integrate their own embroidery software features. This puts Embird in a different league than i.e. the OpenEmbedded software. It is possible to freely modify Embird's source code, but only to a limited extent.
Some companies offer design/digitizing tools that are free to use and make lots of money from a premium subscription, but a lot of their functionality is shortchanged. For example, EmbroideryStudio, a former embroidery design software, costs $2250 for commercial use and $450 for education, costs for a subscription of $750 per year . It's true that it will make you $750 if you make $7500 per year, but I'd rather have a piece of software that is functional, than one that will make me money, but which is sub-standard in functionality. In other words, buy a piece of software that won't let you down because you will actually want to use it!
From my experience I have found that the most popular embroidery software do have some common feature that make them a good choice for most people:
Good selection of most popular types of embroidery.
Good point-of-use user interface (fewest number of menus possible).
Also includes basic features to export designs to other software.
Includes a good selection of import/export software
Includes a good selection of import/export formats.
May include technical support.
May include browser incompatibility issues. 827ec27edc
